About Us

Utility Design

A family of musicians making tools for musicians

We are a family of musicians working together to make learning easier. We know that many people are learning on Youtube and being inspired by the wonderful artists and musicians that are posting online. We also know that the best way to learn is to slow down, repeat and mindfully practice.

With UD Vidami and UD Rep, you can do that handsfree. You can play along, find that difficult spot that needs work, and then slow it down and practice gradually getting up to speed. We decided to build this pedal to make people happy because it helps get rid of the frustration of having to reach for your mouse or keyboard and take your hands out of position every time you want to control the video.

We want to help people learn and stay motivated to make music and our pedals do just that: make learning online faster and easier.

UD Team

Amy knows that inspiration, focus, and consistency are the most effective ingredients to learning. She knew what a useful tool the original UD Rep was from its inception, and after her son Quinn created it, she became committed to the adventure of bringing it to market. The journey has been a learning experience every step of the way.

From hand soldering and building the first 100 Rep prototypes to now managing the entire manufacturing process and business, Amy continues to grow Utility Design. Drawing on her experience as a music producer, teacher, yogi, and mother of three, Amy is committed to sharing her love of music and of learning.

That is why she is excited to introduce the new UD Vidami to musicians of every level so that they can more effectively transcribe solos, practice songs and learn new techniques faster and easier. Amy feels so blessed to work with her talented UD family and have the support of so many great musicians.
Wayne is a television composer, producer, and Professor of Audio Design at USC's Iovine and Young Acadamey

As a lover of all things guitar, Wayne understands the absolute necessity of having as many pedals as possible at your feet, especially transparent overdrives. One day, while practicing with YouTube, he looked at his pedalboard and thought: “If I had a pedal to control YouTube, I could spend less time using the mouse and more time sounding like Robben Ford!” Luckily for Wayne, his son Quinn was able to make one of those dreams come true by designing and creating the original UD Rep pedal!

As a Co-Founder of Utility Design, it's Wayne’s goal to better understand the needs of all types of musicians and to help UD in creating innovative products that will bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be.
Quinn is an instrumentalist and developer who designed and created the prototype for the original UD Rep pedal. Currently he is a sophomore at the USC Iovine and Young Academy, which focuses on the Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

Quinn started learning guitar at the age of 6, and has since been learning guitar almost exclusively online. With a passion for connecting his love for music and technology, he created the original UD Rep pedal to make his guitar learning experience better!

In addition to his work with UD, Quinn works as a freelance web developer and runs his own online earring business, Kikay.
Austin is a recent graduate from Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and a master’s degree in Computer Science, focused on human-computer interaction.

He‘s a self-taught guitarist who learned most of what he knows from YouTube. He remembers spending countless hours playing along with videos of one of his favorite guitarists, Andy McKee, trying to learn his songs. If only UD had existed back then...

As the son of two musicians, Austin’s dream is for music and creativity to be a part of his everyday life. He’s excited to be a part of UD, where he can combine his skills as an engineer with his love for music, to help change how guitarists of all skill levels learn the instrument!
Ian is a recent Stanford graduate, with a Masters degree in Computer Science and a Bachelors Degree in Symbolic Systems. He studied artificial intelligence and human-computer interfaces during his graduate studies and cognitive science during his undergraduate studies. He is currently a software engineer at Oracle NetSuite and lives in San Francisco.

He’s been an avid guitar player for over ten years, and when he’s not playing guitar he finds time to design, build, and fix things. From playing with Legos, to woodworking and repairing surfboards, to building web apps and software, engineering has always been a way for him to express himself similar to how he expresses himself through music and art.
